gratitude during impossible times

The Quiet Power of Gratitude When Life Feels Impossible

Many of our readers in the United States have just celebrated Thanksgiving, and it felt like the perfect moment to reflect on the quiet yet transformative strength that comes from a consistent practice of gratitude.

When Life Feels Heavy, Gratitude Feels Impossible

I understand you — truly. I’ve been in those same moments when everything feels dark, when one disappointment follows another, when the heart is bruised by tragedy and nothing makes sense anymore. In those moments, the mind whispers, “Grateful? For what? Everything is falling apart.”

Yet it is precisely in these moments that gratitude becomes most vital.

When sorrow, anger, or regret overwhelm us, we sink into very low vibrational fields — and those fields pull us down even further. Gratitude, even practiced for just a few minutes, gently lifts us upward. It is as if the world shifts ever so slightly, revealing a little more light than before.

Even in the worst situation, there is always one small thing you can be grateful for. Do not let the ego convince you otherwise.

Two Simple Ways I Practice Gratitude

Personally, I use two approaches depending on how much time I have.

When I’m rushed: I simply think or quietly whisper, “Thank you, Beloved, for…” and let whatever comes to mind complete the sentence.

Sometimes I thank the sunshine. Sometimes I thank the warmth of my home, the comfort of my bed, or the food on my table. They are simple, random things — yet they open the heart.

When I have more time, especially during morning meditation: I place my hand on my heart and focus on generating the feeling of gratitude rather than naming specific items. I let the emotion expand gently from within. I finish with:

May I always feel grateful.

May I always feel peace.

May I always feel love.

Gratitude Softens the Mind and Soothes the Nervous System

A grateful mind cannot spiral into negativity — just as night cannot exist at noon. With regular practice, gratitude relaxes the nervous system, eases tension, and softens the constant mental chatter. It also reduces cravings, the urge to compete, and the feeling that you must chase more, more, more. You begin to notice how much you already have. Jealousy fades. Restlessness loosens its grip. And sometimes, for the first time in your life, you may feel a deep, steady sense of inner fulfillment — a fullness that does not disappear.

Gratitude Helps You Return to the Present Moment

Most people live everywhere except here: in yesterday’s worries or tomorrow’s fears. Their bodies walk through the world, but their minds drift far away. Life passes by unnoticed.

I experienced this myself just a few days ago. I ran into my local supermarket, the same one I’ve been visiting for five years. Usually I rush in, throw things into the cart, and hurry to the checkout because, of course, there are always “more important” things waiting.

But that day, I slowed down. I chose to be fully present. And suddenly, for the first time, I truly saw the place: the beautiful paintings on the walls, the elegant decorations hanging near the ceiling, the soft classical music, the kindness of the employees.

It felt as though I had entered this supermarket for the very first time — even though I had walked through its doors thousands of times before. That is what presence does. Gratitude opens that door.

Gratitude Makes You Warmer and More Understanding

When we feel empty or hurt inside, we become cold, impatient, reactive. We lash out, often without meaning to. But gratitude softens the edges. It becomes easier to understand others, easier to forgive, easier to meet the world with warmth rather than defensiveness.

And finally — the benefit most people secretly care about the most: Gratitude multiplies what you focus on.

If you feel grateful for love — whether divine love, the love of one person, or even the love of your pet — more love will appear in your life. If you feel grateful for health, your health will strengthen. If you feel grateful for abundance, more abundance will quietly find its way to you. Gratitude expands whatever it touches.

So if life feels heavy today, pause for just a breath. Place your hand on your heart. Find one small thing — even the tiniest flicker — that you can appreciate. Let that feeling grow, even for a moment. Gratitude will not erase your struggles, but it will anchor you, lift you, and gently open the door to a softer, brighter world. And with each quiet “thank you,” that world will keep expanding around you.
