Why do spirits attach themselves to houses? - Part 1

HAUNTED HOUSES, PART 1

In Part 1 of this post on Haunted Houses, we will discuss why spirits attach themselves to houses and properties.

When most people think of haunted houses, what comes to mind are old, abandoned, dark, run down structures which we would never enter, let alone live in. But looks can be deceiving. Most often we find that spirits attach themselves to average-looking houses, including brand-new construction.

WHY DO SPIRITS ATTACH THEMSELVES TO HOUSES?

There are many reasons why spirits decide to attach themselves to residences. Below, we will cover the four most prevalent circumstances for spirit attachment.

Reason One: The over-attachment of spirits to material possessions

There are spirits who—during their lifetime—were strongly attached to material items and their main goal while living was to acquire more wealth and more materialistic things. When such a person passes away, they are obviously unable to take their material possessions with them, and parting with what was the focal point of their life seems unbearable, if not impossible. Therefore, these spirits decide not to transition to the other side so that they can remain with their earthly possessions. And in most cases, the most valuable possession was their home. It should be noted that these kinds of spirits are very protective of their physical assets, and as a result, they will be extremely aggressive in nature.

Just to clarify – there is nothing wrong with striving to make more money or valuing material goods and we are not casting judgment against people that attain wealth and fortune. It is the strong over-attachment to these goods that is harmful. Material items belong to the physical world and when we leave our physical body, we need to leave our physical possessions behind as well.

Reason Two: Spirits unaware of their own death

There are many spirits who died unexpectedly, and as a result, they are not even aware of their death. For example, imagine a family who dies tragically in a car accident. Since their death was unexpected, they had not prepared for their end of life. So, they return to their home as if nothing had happened and continue to live their regular life. They go to work, shop for groceries, visit friends' houses, attend movies, and go about their normal life. In terms of character, these kinds of spirits are vastly different from the first group described above because they are more grounded and practical. The movie “Sixth Sense” does a very good job in illustrating what happens when people die unexpectedly, but are not aware of their own death.

Reason Three: Spirits connected to the Land's history

The third group consists of spirits who died on a piece of land where a house is currently being built. Unfortunately, people in our modern times build houses anywhere without taking into consideration the history of the land. Houses are often built on former cemeteries or upon land that was once a battlefield or a location where mass murders or other catastrophes took place. Even though there are no physical signs of the past horrific events, their astral component is still present with the souls who lost their physical body but didn’t transition to the other side. Therefore, it is always important to check on not only the history of the house and its previous owners (for example, whether a previous owner might have been murdered or committed suicide in the home), but also on the history of the land itself.

Reason Four: Spirits invited through summoning activities

There are also spirits who were summoned in various ways. These spirits weren’t initially from the house, but their past or current owners beckoned them by playing different kinds of summoning games (such as Oujia Board) or performed a channeling. Spirits could also have been accidentally summoned when psychic readings or spiritual healing were conducted. These so called “invited” spirits rarely leave on their own. Even after they are led away by a skilled exorcist, they often return with the following attitude: I was invited so now I have the right to be here.

People often try to get rid of spirits using holy water, smudging, white candle clearing, Feng Shui, or rice and salt. Unfortunately, in most cases, we find these methods to be unsuccessful if the spirits are already attached to the property. Additionally, people that attempt to use these methods often become possessed by spirits who were once possessing the house. One should always consult a qualified professional rather than taking these kinds of matters into their own hands.

In Part 2, we will discuss how to recognize whether spirits are attached to the property and how this could influence the people who reside there.
