Spirit Possession and Physical Symptoms: What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You

Your body never lies. It may remain silent for years, but sooner or later it will tell the truth about what is happening in your mind and heart—even if you are not yet aware of it yourself. Most of the physical illnesses I am going to talk about today do not begin in the body. They begin in thought. The state of your mind influences how the body responds. From this perspective, it is a law just as precise as the law of gravity, only much harder to see with the naked eye. If you hold certain thoughts and emotions within yourself for a long time, sooner or later they may leave a mark on the physical body. The body is a mirror. It reflects what is happening within the emotional and mental layers of a person.

You know the saying, “A healthy mind in a healthy body.” In this context, however, it is worth reversing it. A healthy mind and healthy emotions help create a healthy body, not the other way around. When your thoughts are peaceful and your emotions positive, the body becomes a wonderful home for the soul. You have strength, energy, and the possibility of a long life. But when false or harmful beliefs settle into the mind, the body begins to tell the story.

The Language the Body Speaks

According to this understanding, every disturbance in thought and emotion may correspond with a certain physical problem. We do not view this simply as coincidence or metaphor, but as a connection we have observed for many years.

Rage—the sudden, violent kind—most often expresses itself through headaches. Anger and resentment held inside for years, not exploding outward but quietly smoldering beneath the surface, may burden the liver. Fear about the future, survival, or finances may settle in the lower back and express itself there through pain.

These symptoms rarely appear immediately. Most often, we work on them for years in the background of everyday life, without realizing that we ourselves, through our way of thinking, may be creating the foundation for future illness.

When the Voice Within You Is Not Your Own

There is another layer to this phenomenon that is discussed much less often. The body responds to every mental and emotional signal, regardless of where that signal comes from. It may come from you. It may come from the people around you, from the group in which you live, or even from humanity as a whole, of which you are a part. And sometimes, according to our understanding of spirit possession, it may come from the spirit of a deceased person who has attached itself to you.

If, for some reason, you begin attracting a soul that has not moved on to the other side—all of these reasons are described in the book Possessed by Ghosts—that spirit may begin generating certain negative emotions within you.

Over time, those emotions, just like your own, may begin leaving an imprint on the physical body. If the attached spirit suffered from a particular illness during life, that illness may—but does not have to—appear as a symptom in your body.

Not Every Illness Has a Spirit Behind It

This is where we need to be especially precise, because this is where misunderstandings most often begin. Not all physical illnesses come from spirits. Many of our clients contact us expecting that removing a spirit will also free them from physical symptoms. Sometimes this does happen—but only when that particular physical problem was connected with the spirit in the first place.

If an illness did not originate from a spirit, the spirit’s departure will not heal the physical body. We do not heal the physical body. We help with healing on the mental and emotional level. This is an important distinction to remember: the removal of a spirit is not the same as a promise of physical health. It means freedom from a foreign influence on your mind and emotions. That in itself can bring tremendous relief, but it does not always translate directly into physical healing.

The Responsibility No One Can Take Away From You

You are responsible for healing your own mind and your own emotions. From this perspective, illness may develop from false thoughts and negative emotions, and you are the one who has the power to change them. And here is a practical thought.

If the body needs years to translate a thought into a physical symptom, then it means you have time—if you learn how to use it. Before a headache becomes a habit and a tense back becomes part of everyday life, the body will usually send more subtle signals: irritation, heaviness, insomnia, or anxiety without an obvious reason. It may be worth treating these signals not as an enemy that needs to be fought, but as a messenger that arrives earlier than you think.

A short moment of observation can sometimes reveal a great deal. What was I feeling before my head started to hurt? What thought have I been carrying inside me over the past week. Questions like these may help you recognize a source before it becomes deeply rooted in your way of thinking and feeling. This is why it is worth observing your emotions carefully, so they do not become patterns that are repeated again and again.

The same applies to distinguishing between what belongs to you and what feels foreign. Not every heavy thought that enters your mind necessarily has to be your own. But how you respond to it is always your choice. And that is exactly the point where real inner work begins. The body does not become ill in order to punish you. It becomes ill in order to wake you up.
