You've likely heard the saying, “The only constant in life is change,” more than once. It's repeated so often it almost fades into the background—but for most people, even the slightest change sparks discomfort, if not outright fear. Why? Because change propels us into unfamiliar territory, and the unfamiliar tends to feel threatening. As a result, we cling to what we know—our routines, habits, and even our suffering—because it's predictable. And what’s predictable feels safe.
Many of us end up stuck in situations that cause us pain simply because they’re familiar. It’s as if someone is holding on tightly to a burning stove—despite the burns, they refuse to let go because, at least, they know the stove. Only when the pain becomes unbearable do they muster the courage to step into the unknown.
Trying to maintain the status quo is like trying to walk on your hands for a lifetime—it’s possible, but deeply unnatural. Our soul didn’t come into this human form to stagnate. It came to experience, to evolve, to flow with the current of life. This current—call it evolution, transformation, or growth—never stops moving. Even if you take a day off, the world keeps spinning forward.
This current is powerful. When we align ourselves with it, it lifts us up. But the moment we push against it, everything starts to crumble. The harder you resist, the louder life will push back. That discomfort, that unraveling, is not punishment—it’s a nudge from your soul, begging you to move forward.
One of the reasons we fear change is because we dread making a “wrong” choice. What if we lose money? What if people turn away from us? But here’s the truth: there is no such thing as a bad decision. Every choice carries with it a lesson—an opportunity for your soul to grow. Even when a decision appears to cost you dearly, the wisdom gained is often worth far more than the loss.
So you never truly lose. Not spiritually. Because everything that happens is simply leading you to deeper understanding. And that’s a kind of wealth no one can take from you.
Because change is constant, even the aftermath of so-called bad decisions has an expiration date. If you're in the middle of something painful or confusing, know this: it won’t last forever. Every storm ends. Every shadow fades. Every night gives way to dawn. Even the worst situation has a shelf life. Hold onto that truth, especially when you feel like there's no end in sight. Because there always is.
We can express “The only constant in life is change” in a more profound way: “Impermanence is the only truth.” Everything is fleeting. The moment something begins, it also starts its march toward an end. This idea might stir fear in you—perhaps you immediately thought of death. “If everything is impermanent,” you may ask, “does that mean I will one day cease to exist?”
That fear is valid—if you believe you are only your physical body. But you are not flesh and bones. You are soul, you are consciousness, you are energy wrapped in temporary form. And energy never dies—it only changes shape. Death is not the end; it’s simply a doorway.
Once you grasp this deeply, you won’t mourn the dead the same way. You may even rejoice, knowing they have stepped onto a new path.
Now pause and imagine—what if you lived each day truly remembering that nothing lasts forever? Wouldn’t everything change?
How would you treat a family member who often irritates you if you knew you may not always have the chance to see them again? Would you still waste your energy on resentment, or would you soften, offer compassion, and be present—fully aware that this moment may never return?
Are you exhausted from caring for your young children? Think about how fleeting this phase is. One day they’ll grow up, leave the house, and this exhausting moment will be just a memory. Wouldn’t that realization help you find more patience, even amidst your fatigue? Wouldn't it fill you with gratitude?
And now ask yourself this: if today were your final day, how would you live it? Wouldn’t it become the most precious day of your life? Wouldn’t your current problems suddenly feel small, almost irrelevant?
You’d celebrate today. You’d honor it. You’d see it for what it is—a gift, sacred and unrepeatable.
