Spirit Possession and the Body: How Emotions Turn Into Physical Illness

Modern medicine is increasingly acknowledging something ancient traditions have known for thousands of years: a human being is not only flesh and bone. The problems we carry deep within—fears, unresolved conflicts, suppressed emotions—do not remain locked in the mind. They descend. They settle in the body, revealing themselves as tension, discomfort, and, over time, illness. Why does this happen? And is it always true that we are the only source of our own emotions?

A Human Being Is More Than One Body

Ancient yogic teachings describe the human being as composed of several interwoven layers. The outermost is the physical body—what we can see and touch. Just beneath it exists the energetic body, an invisible network through which life force flows. Deeper still lie the emotional and mental layers. Beneath them—intuition and inner recognition. And at the very center, unchanged and still, rests the Divine essence, often described as a spark of something higher within us.

These layers are not separate. They are in constant interaction. What happens on the level of thought and emotion immediately reflects in the energetic field, and from there—into the physical body. The direction is always the same: from the inside outward.

Life Energy and Blockages

When a person is in harmony—clear in thought, emotionally processed, inwardly at peace—life energy flows freely. The body is nourished, resilient, full of vitality. But when chronic fear appears, when anger is suppressed, when sadness lingers or guilt takes root—the flow becomes disrupted. Blockages begin to form, like dams in a river. Energy accumulates in one place, creating pressure, while other areas become deprived. Over time, the strongest blockage begins to manifest physically as illness.

Each emotion has its reflection in the body. Fear settles in the lower regions—often in the kidneys or lower spine. Unprocessed anger affects the liver and gallbladder. Grief and sorrow gather in the chest and lungs. The throat area relates to self-expression—those who silence themselves for years often experience issues with the thyroid or chronic throat conditions. This is not accidental. It follows a pattern.

Emotions That Are Not Always Ours

Here we come to an aspect that is rarely discussed, yet considered essential in many ancient teachings: not all emotions we experience fully belong to us. The emotional world of a human being does not exist in isolation. Around us—and within us—there are subtle layers that are not visible to the eye. Among them are the collective emotional states of humanity and spirits - souls of people who didn't cross to the other side after death. Why do they remain?

Because they are drawn to what is familiar—their own unresolved emotions. Anger, jealousy, longing, addiction, desire. If these were not worked through during life, they do not disappear with death. Instead, they persist—and in a sense, the individual becomes that emotion. Now imagine that such a person was once close to us. When we think of them, when we feel longing or attachment, we may draw them closer. And if they have not moved on, they can unknowingly radiate into our emotional field what they themselves have become: restlessness, sadness, desire, anger.

Where Do Sudden Emotional States Come From?

A person influenced in this way (possessed by spirits) often does not recognize it. To them, the emotions feel entirely their own. But those around them may notice something unusual. Sudden reactions. Emotional intensity that seems disproportionate. Outbursts that rise quickly and fade just as suddenly—leaving behind confusion or regret.

This becomes especially visible when control is weakened—during fatigue, stress, or after alcohol. In such moments, emotional states may become unusually strong, at times almost overwhelming, and not necessarily rooted in the person’s own psyche.

When Another’s Emotion Affects the Body

And here the cycle completes itself. An external influence—such as persistent anger—intensifies that same emotion within the living person. As always, the body receives it. The liver, the gallbladder, the nervous system begin to carry the weight. Symptoms increase. The strain deepens.

The person searches for answers in diet, stress, or genetics—but cannot fully explain what is happening. In some cases, when such an attached presence is released—when it is helped to move on—the emotional intensity decreases, and physical relief may follow. But this is not a universal rule. Illness ultimately belongs to the individual. Spirits may intensify it, but the root lies within—within personal emotional patterns, life history, and unresolved inner states. This is why no spiritual process replaces medical care—whether conventional or natural. These are different paths, yet they can complement one another.

Healing Requires Wholeness

True healing must reach the root. Breathwork, meditation, and mindful physical practices help dissolve blockages within the energetic and emotional body. But equally important is awareness: are the emotions I experience truly mine? Do I recognize all that I feel? A human being is a unified whole. When one layer suffers, the others feel its weight. And when one begins to heal—everything begins to shift. Gently at first. Then more clearly.
