What People Ask Most About Spirit Possession

Sometimes we sense that something unseen shapes our emotions or relationships. These insights come from Dr. Wanda Pratnicka, who has spent over 50 years helping people understand and free themselves from spirit possession.

When people face deep emotional pain—depression, fear, or sudden mood swings—they often turn to doctors, medication, or therapy. But when these bring little relief, what leads someone to seek help from an exorcist instead?

Dr. Wanda: In most cases, this choice comes only after every other avenue has been explored. People consult doctors, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists, and may also turn to various alternative healing methods. But when all conventional and holistic efforts fail to bring lasting peace, some begin to look beyond what is visible—and reach out to an exorcist as a final attempt to understand what might truly be happening within and around them.

Many imagine possession as in horror movies—people shaking or screaming. Yet in your book Possessed by Ghosts, you describe it very differently and say it’s quite common. Can you explain?

Dr. Wanda: Yes, possession is more common than most people realize, but Hollywood’s version is pure fiction meant to entertain, not educate. In truth, it’s a subtle and often misunderstood phenomenon. Spirit attachment can appear as depression, fear, or sudden changes in behavior. We rarely consider that a loved one who withdraws or turns to alcohol might be influenced by unseen energies.

Many people suffer for years without realizing the real cause. If we look around, we see countless individuals in emotional pain—some may be affected by these unseen forces, which call for understanding rather than fear.

Do people still react to exorcisms and spirits with fear or disbelief? Has society’s approach changed over the years?

Dr. Wanda: Yes, absolutely. As people become more open-minded and spiritually aware, exorcism is no longer met with the same fear or skepticism. The younger generation is more in touch with their inner world and often senses that some emotional struggles may not come entirely from within. Even if they don’t speak about it, many intuitively feel that unseen influences can play a role—and that awareness is the first step toward healing.

This shift is clear in the growing interest in Possessed by Ghosts and our work. Years ago, venues hesitated to host our lectures; now we receive more invitations than we can accept. Just as meditation moved from uncommon to mainstream, understanding unseen energies is also becoming viewed with curiosity rather than fear.

Do you find that some people are impossible to free from spirits?

Dr. Wanda: No, we’ve never encountered a case that couldn’t be helped. The method used at our center is always effective in removing attached spirits. However, after the process, some people may unknowingly attract new ones if they continue to hold onto intense negative emotions or destructive thought patterns.

We always explain how important it is to care for one’s inner state—to learn how to manage emotions and thoughts so that such energies can no longer return. Each of us carries old subconscious programs that can influence our lives without our awareness. If someone avoids facing them, there’s a possibility that spirit attachment could reappear later. But when a person sincerely works on their inner peace, the change is lasting.

Do people who reach out to you for help share anything in common—such as age, religion, or profession?

Dr. Wanda: Spirit attachment can happen to anyone. It has nothing to do with a person’s background, religion, or social status. We work with people from all over the world—Christians, Jews, people of every faith or none at all; celebrities and homemakers alike. Every human being experiences emotions, and when those emotions become deeply imbalanced, the risk of attracting unwanted energies increases.

What our clients share is not who they are, but how they feel when they come to us—scared, confused, and exhausted after trying everything else without finding relief.

Spiritual teachers often say that things don’t happen to us but for us. Can possession by spirits serve a higher purpose?

Dr. Wanda: Yes, it can. Freeing oneself from spirits often begins a more conscious and spiritually aware life, revealing how deeply our emotions shape reality. Attachment occurs when there’s resonance between a person and a spirit—it’s never intentional but happens when strong negative emotions create an opening. Once it occurs, those emotions often intensify.

Through that struggle, people are moved to release what caused the imbalance—anger, guilt, or resentment. In letting go, many discover forgiveness, healing, and renewed peace.

How can someone protect themselves from spirit attachment?

Dr. Wanda: There are effective ways to stay protected, but they require ongoing self-awareness. It’s important to observe what you think and feel, because mistaken thoughts often lead to negative emotions—and those emotions can attract spirits who haven’t yet crossed over.

Regularly practicing forgiveness and self-love is one of the most powerful forms of protection. It keeps your energy clear and balanced. Finally, allow loved ones who have passed away to continue their journey peacefully. Holding onto them too tightly can unintentionally keep their spirits close.

In recent years, the world has faced tremendous upheaval — from the pandemic to political divisions and ongoing wars. Have these events affected the number of people reaching out to your Center for help?

Dr. Wanda: Yes, absolutely. During the pandemic, we saw a rise in requests for help as people, unable to distract themselves, were forced to face long-suppressed fear and loneliness.

Even now, anxiety remains high. Political division, social unrest, and wars have created a global atmosphere of uncertainty and fear. Such times often push people to look inward—not just for relief, but to rediscover peace when the outer world feels unstable.

What brings you the most happiness in your work—and what makes you the saddest?

Dr. Wanda: Like anyone, I experience the full range of human emotions, including sadness. But I allow such feelings to pass quickly without giving them too much attention. It’s important to acknowledge them, yet not let them take root.

What brings me the greatest happiness is being able to serve others. Helping people find peace and understanding fills life with purpose. When we serve, we naturally step beyond the ego and its negative tendencies—and in doing so, we experience genuine joy.
