How to Free Yourself of Egoism

How to Free Yourself of Egoism?

We've been hearing so much about epidemics and physical diseases over the past few years. But let's note that there is another kind of epidemic around us, especially in the West, and that is the epidemic of egoism. In today's post we will discuss how to cure the egoism in you and open your heart to selflessness.

The possibility of working without egoism

Imagine a world where everyone does their work not for the benefit they want to achieve, but for the sheer joy of doing the work or for the good that comes from their work. They are not chained to a result. They don't look at whether a person deserves the fruits of their labor or not. They don't look at whether they will be cheated. They don't care if they get something in return or if someone thanks them for their work. They simply give of themselves, all their heart to serve the world. On top of that, they perform each task to the best of their ability, as if the task were sacred. This, dear friend, is precisely the absence of egoism. It is a wonderful selflessness.

Our world, however, works quite the opposite. We think first of ourselves. Before we make any effort, we think in these terms: Is it worth my time? How much money will I gain from it? Will it give me pleasure? Most often we chase after all the things that are really impermanent, fleeting. Life is not about chasing pleasures. If we chase them, we become slaves to them and make our peace of mind dependent on whether we have money or not, whether a certain person is in our life or not, whether we have certain material possessions or not. All these things are impermanent;  therefore, it is normal that they will appear in our lives and disappear, causing pain or only short-term pleasure.

Generally we focus too much on ourselves and our own pleasures. This is a path that will only increase the wants and needs of our ego and thus cause more and more suffering. Our task is not to let ego direct our lives. In doing so, we will move toward enlightenment.

Is reciprocal help enough to overcome egoism?

You don't get rid of egoism the moment you do someone a favor because they also helped you in the past. Maybe you help someone because they are very nice to you, or you help because you subconsciously hope that someday that person will also help you in the future. Obviously, it is better to behave like this than to ignore everything and everyone and not care about anything at all. But this way you will not cure the egoism in you. That would be too easy, wouldn’t it?

Getting rid of egoism is incredibly difficult. You yourself can recall moments in your life when everything was rebelling in you.  You may even have exploded with incredible anger because you had to help a person who you believe didn’t deserve help, or who hurt you in the past. These are the very moments when transformation takes place in us, when we get rid of egoism. This is when we allow more light to fill our heart and soul.

The process of moving away from egoism

The process of moving away from egoism

You don't get rid of egoism right away. It is a process that can sometimes be incredibly painful, but I swear to you that your soul will benefit a hundredfold. You don't have to occupy any great position at all to start practicing selflessness. You can start today, right now. For example, think about your family. If you have children, then you know that parenting is about constant giving. Focus on giving your children the best you can, serve them to the best of your ability, do all your chores with a cheerful smile on your face. Don't think about the fruits of your labor; don't expect the word "thank you"; don't expect anyone to do as you please. Find joy in the very act of giving. If you give with love from the heart, you will not feel depleted of energy. You can act in the same way towards your parents, towards your friends, towards your boss.

You must prepare yourself that if you decide to get rid of selfishness, life will probably start testing you. Suddenly, situations or people will start appearing in your life who will ask for something, and who will trigger even rage in you, and you will have to decide whether to selflessly give or not. Your ego will rebel. Your friends may even discourage you from giving, but the universal law says: "always give everything to everyone".

You must know that these situations arise only for you to cure the egoism in you. It's not about anything else, even though your mind will tell you a different story. Remember that you are the one who gains the most from selfless giving, because it is your soul that rises higher and higher in vibration, more and more you acquire divine qualities and move closer towards enlightenment. Before God gives anything to you, He doesn't analyze whether you deserve it, what mistakes you've made, whether you remembered Him or thanked Him last time. He is always ready to give to His children no matter what behavior His children have displayed. Act exactly as He does and you will find your bliss.
