Spiritual practices can be compared to fire, in that when it is used in the right manner, it can keep our house warm and cozy during winter months, but when used in the wrong way, it can burn our home down to the ground. Therefore, any kind of spiritual practice should be approached with caution. The most common repercussion of a spiritual practice that is being performed incorrectly, or with ill-intentions, is spirit attachment.
A few years ago at a spiritual expo in New York, a woman named Elizabeth approached us for help. She looked depressed and hopeless. When we conducted a check-up, we discovered that an unusually large number of spirits had attached themselves to her. This usually happens when someone is a heavy drinker or a drug addict, but to our surprise, she didn’t abuse either of these substances. After a lengthy discussion, we finally came to the conclusion that her morning meditation practice during her commute on a crowded train had exposed her to spirit attachment. Elizabeth would fall into a meditation state so deep, that she would lose a sense of here and now, which ultimately created an opening for spirits to enter. In addition, crowded spaces are not suitable for meditation because spirits are drawn to large gatherings of people. To be safe, one should meditate alone or in a very small group, and always be aware of their physical presence.
Practices that are designed to speed up spiritual development, or to gain psychic abilities, are particularly dangerous when it comes to spirit attachment. We get many requests for help from people who attended these kinds of workshops and start to experience intrusive thoughts, unexplained anxiety, chronic fatigue, and intense negative emotions. They often start to hear voices pressuring them to do destructive things and try to persuade them that they are in contact with enlightened beings such as Jesus, Buddha, or the Holy Spirit. But these enlightened beings would never cause any kind of harm or suffering. Unfortunately, these people were in contact with spirits who possess their bodies. Spirits realize that when a person is under the false impression that they are in contact with an enlightened being, that they will continue to control the relationship. This way, they can use that person’s body for a long period of time. In some cases, people eventually “wake up” and finally realize who they are really in touch with (a spirit), but only after their life has fallen apart.
Other spiritual practices that could contribute to spirit attachment are those that involve abusing substances that temporarily alter a person’s state of consciousness or provide an out of body experience. When a person travels out of their physical body, a spirit can easily take advantage of the opportunity and steal it from them. When a person eventually returns to their body, they start to sense someone else’s presence and don’t feel like themselves. Overtime, many people become addicted to substances and to out of body experiences that illegal drugs provide. These people will claim that each trip provides them with important spiritual insights, but in fact, these insights come from very low realms of the astral world. This is also why some of these out of body experiences can become very unpleasant, and as a result, people will experience anxiety attacks, paranoia and many more negative emotions. The long-term effects are spirit attachments that may cause psychosis or personality disorders.
The most dangerous spiritual practices are the ones that aim at contacting spirits directly. When a person tries to contact spirits, or with the help of a medium, other spirits usually appear instead—but not the spirit that was being summoned (a deceased family member or a close friend). Spirits know a person’s thoughts and emotions, so they can easily manipulate the living and pretend to be someone else. In such cases, spirit possession quickly takes place and it’s hard to reverse it later on. We wrote about this experience in detail in our October blog post.
Generally, most people take care of their physical body. They would probably think twice before swallowing something unfamiliar, or allowing a doctor to perform a surgery on them without knowing why. But when it comes to their spiritual body, many people approach this indifferently, even though the spiritual body is much more important than a physical body. Damage done to a physical body will only last one lifetime, but damage done to a spiritual body could have consequences for many incarnations.
In summary, before you commit to any spiritual activity or practice, remember to not only explore the benefits of this exercise, but also potential risks. Once you commit to it, please make sure to practice it correctly.
