Only love survives after death

Only Love Survives Death. What Happens to Everything Else?

We live in a time when emotions seem to be rising like waves before a storm. Both positive and negative feelings are growing stronger. Joy can feel more radiant than ever, yet anger can erupt with greater intensity. Looking at the world around us, it's easy to feel as though we're caught in a never-ending conflict. Nations turn against nations, groups against other groups, and even members of the same family find themselves divided. At times, our beautiful, extraordinary planet resembles one enormous battlefield.

And in a sense, it is. But according to this spiritual understanding, there is a deeper purpose behind the struggle. Everything unfolding around you presents an opportunity to make a conscious choice about the path you wish to follow. The question is simple, though answering it requires courage: Which force has a stronger hold on you—fear or genuine love?

The Art of Managing Yourself

Life on Earth today demands that we become increasingly aware of our own emotions. Those who understand what they feel, learn to manage their reactions, and consciously choose which emotions to nurture are better equipped to navigate life's challenges. Yet here lies an interesting paradox. Even someone who follows a darker path, driven by fear rather than love, may accomplish more in the material world if they understand and direct their emotions than someone who allows every passing feeling to control them.

But such a path, however successful it may appear, is ultimately destined to fail. For a while, a person may gain power, accumulate wealth, or establish control over others. Yet nothing lasting can be built upon a foundation that turns away from God. Sooner or later—and certainly when the physical life comes to an end—the futility of that path becomes clear. Whatever is rooted in negativity must eventually be revealed, released, and brought to an end.

The Great Separation

Notice that I say leaving physical existence, rather than leaving the planet. From this spiritual perspective, death does not mean that we immediately leave Earth behind. It is only the physical body that falls away. Our emotions and thoughts remain, particularly those connected to our lower nature and the instinct for survival. This is where a profound separation begins. What does that actually mean? According to this understanding, your being consists of several layers. The outermost is your physical body, which ceases to exist after death. Beneath it lies your emotional nature, and deeper still, your thoughts. Both your emotions and thoughts contain two distinct aspects: a lower and a higher.

At the moment of separation, these two aspects begin to divide, much like oil separating from water. The higher part—love, compassion, selflessness, and thoughts directed toward goodness and God—continues onward with the soul. The lower part does not contain every emotion we experience. Rather, it consists of those rooted in fear: irritation, anger, hatred, rage, envy, and jealousy. It also includes thoughts concerned exclusively with the survival and desires of the physical body. These are the elements that separate from our higher nature and are left behind.

Why does this happen? So that your true being—the essence of who you really are—can enter its next incarnation purified of these lower influences. What is negative must eventually cease to exist. What is positive continues to live. This is why we so often encourage you to reflect upon your actions and ask yourself whether they arise from love or negativity. The more goodness you bring into your own life and the lives of others, the more of your true essence will remain when your physical body is gone. Every act of selfless love is, in a sense, an investment in who you will become beyond this lifetime.

Only Love Will Survive

God is infinite wisdom, omnipresence, and omnipotence. But God is also infinite love. And ultimately, it is this divine nature that endures. In other words, nothing outside infinite love, wisdom, goodness, and divine presence can exist eternally. According to this spiritual teaching, all negative creations—everything that has turned away from the essence of God—must eventually dissolve between incarnations.

Your true nature is good. It cares for others without forgetting itself. It is selfless, loving, and willing to give without constantly expecting something in return. And for this higher nature to unfold more fully, everything that obscures it must gradually fall away. There is a powerful illusion that a person can remain in negativity forever. But that is not possible. One may live in fear, hatred, or resentment for a time, perhaps even for an entire lifetime. Yet these states cannot endure eternally.

God is the source of all life. There is no existence apart from Him. And only what remains united with the divine can truly last forever.

The Shells That Remain in the Astral World

Yet what falls away does not necessarily disappear immediately. These lower remnants may linger in the emotional realm, also known as the astral world, where they can continue to influence those who are still living.

They are sometimes described as astral shells—empty coverings formed from the lower desires, attachments, and emotional patterns that the soul has abandoned as it moves toward higher states of existence. Within this spiritual framework, these remnants are believed to be what participants in séances often encounter, mistakenly assuming they are communicating with the souls of deceased loved ones.

The separation of the soul from its lower principles does not happen at the same pace for everyone. For some, the process is relatively brief. For others, it may take considerably longer. Nevertheless, the teaching holds that sooner or later, every soul must release what is negative. Only then can what is most beautiful, loving, and true within us continue onward.

A Painful Mistake

And this brings us to the heart of the matter. As long as these lower remnants remain in the astral world, they are believed to have the potential to interfere with the lives of the living. In our spiritual work, we also include these astral shells within the broader category of spirits of the deceased.

The difficulty arises when we mistake these lower remnants for something higher—for the soul itself, which remains forever connected to God. This, according to our understanding, is one possible explanation for certain experiences described as spirit possession or spirit attachment.

Imagine believing that, somewhere within your inner world, you are speaking to your father, your mother, or someone you loved deeply. The connection feels familiar. Perhaps even comforting. Yet from this spiritual perspective, what you are encountering may not be the person's higher soul at all, but rather the lower part that the soul must eventually leave behind. Such a misunderstanding can carry painful consequences. We explore these beliefs and experiences in greater detail in Dr. Wanda Pratnicka's book, Possessed by Ghosts.

Yet even this pain can hold a deeper lesson. It reminds us that our true identity is rooted in our divine nature—not in the anger, resentment, jealousy, or fear we may have expressed during our earthly lives.

Spirits Are Easy to Reach, God Is More Difficult

Why can this confusion happen so easily? The lower astral world exists much closer to our ordinary physical experience than the higher spiritual realms. What belongs to the lower world may therefore seem more accessible, more immediate, and easier to encounter. The higher realms, by contrast, are believed to require a much greater transformation of consciousness.

Put simply, spirits are easier to reach. Reaching toward God requires more of us. Within this teaching, God exists at an infinitely higher spiritual vibration. To move closer to the divine, we must elevate our own inner state. Contact with lower astral influences, on the other hand, is believed to involve a lowering of that state. Certain behaviors, such as smoking, consuming alcohol, using drugs, and engaging in other practices described in Possessed by Ghosts, are traditionally understood within our spiritual framework as potentially contributing to this lowering of one's vibration.

For many years, we have helped people who believe they have experienced this kind of spiritual confusion, while also assisting souls, according to our spiritual practice, in moving toward where they belong.

But removing an unwanted spiritual influence is only part of the work. Equally important is understanding why a person may have felt drawn toward these lower influences in the first place. What fears, unresolved emotions, or patterns of behavior may have contributed to that attraction? Without addressing these deeper causes, the same patterns may continue, leaving the door open to further difficulties.

Recognize Who You Really Are

Ultimately, this is about much more than spiritual cleansing. It is about recognizing one profound truth: Your deepest nature is divine. And if your true nature is divine, why would you seek connection with what is lower—even when it seems to speak with the voice of someone you love?

Consider what it is that you truly love about that person. Is it their anger? Their jealousy? Their bitterness, fear, or resentment? Of course not. You love the goodness you recognized in them. Their kindness. The warmth of their presence. The moments when their heart was open and their love shone through. In other words, you love the higher part of their being, not the lower nature that spiritual teachings describe as frightened, envious, self-pitying, or consumed by hatred.

Missing someone who has died is one of the most natural expressions of love. We long to hear their voice again, feel their presence, and know that the connection we once shared has not been lost. But perhaps the deepest connection is not something we need to search for in the shadows of the astral world.

Perhaps it has been within us all along. In the love we still carry. In the kindness they awakened in us. In the goodness that continues to shape our lives long after their physical presence is gone. Because what comes from God within you never truly dies. Everything else is merely an armor of fear—something you may have worn for a lifetime, but which, sooner or later, you must learn to take off.
