Why Is There So Much Greed and Abuse of Power in the World?

It is difficult not to notice how much greed and abuse seem to surround those who hold power today—political power, but economic power as well. It raises a difficult question: why is goodness not more widespread when inequality, self-interest, and the misuse of position appear to be so common?

It is worth beginning with a clear answer: the world you live in is the world that gives you the greatest opportunity for growth. The conditions we face today are difficult for everyone—for the privileged and wealthy as well as for the vulnerable and poor. And, quite often, these conditions go hand in hand with greed and the abuse of power, even at the highest levels. Yet this does not mean that evil has gained the upper hand.

A World in Constant Balance

There are people who act against the good of humanity, and there are others whose thoughts, feelings, and actions remain aligned with it. We may describe them, in simple terms, as negative and positive.

From this spiritual perspective, a positive person carries a strength far greater than that of someone immersed in negativity. One positive being may balance the influence of as many as a thousand negative ones. There may be relatively few people whose lives are strongly rooted in positivity, while those pulled toward negativity appear far more numerous—and yet the smaller group is still capable of restoring balance on a vibrational level.

Negative people move toward lower vibrations. Positive people rise toward higher ones. The weight of one side, however, does not necessarily correspond to the number of people standing on it. A comparatively small amount of positive energy can counterbalance a much greater amount of negativity. That is why balance continues to exist, even when everything we see around us seems to suggest otherwise.

The Hard Numbers Behind Power

The scale of the abuse of power is not simply a matter of perception. Some aspects of it can also be seen in data published by major international organizations. Transparency International's 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index covers 182 countries and territories. The global average fell to 42 points out of 100, its lowest level in more than a decade. More than two-thirds of countries scored below 50, reflecting widespread concerns about corruption in the public sector. Only five countries scored above 80; a decade earlier, there had been twelve.

Economic power reveals another striking picture. According to Oxfam's 2026 report, the combined wealth of the world's billionaires rose by more than 16 percent during 2025, reaching a record $18.3 trillion. That increase was three times faster than the average annual growth recorded during the previous five years. Since 2020, billionaire wealth has risen by 81 percent.

The concentration becomes even more visible at the very top. Oxfam's methodology calculates that the world's twelve richest billionaires possess more wealth than the poorest half of humanity—more than four billion people combined. The organization also estimates that billionaires are approximately 4,000 times more likely to hold political office than ordinary citizens, illustrating how closely economic and political power can become intertwined.

These figures do not, of course, tell us what any individual intends, nor do they judge particular people. They describe measurable patterns identified by independent organizations. Still, they reinforce the broader observation made above: greed, inequality, and the misuse of power are real phenomena. Their existence, however, does not mean that evil is winning.

A Time of Intensification

Why do conflicts seem to be intensifying so strongly now? From a spiritual point of view, the Earth is passing through a profound period of transformation—a time of intensification that magnifies the existing vibrational state of each person. Someone who lives through positive emotions may find that the ability to express them becomes stronger. But the same process can occur in the opposite direction. Those drawn toward negativity may become increasingly capable of expressing that negative vibration.

Both sides intensify. Yet the underlying balance remains. What is positive within a person begins to reveal itself more clearly, just as what is negative can become harder to hide. Anger, rage, greed, resentment, and envy may grow in those whose negative side predominates. At the same time, people guided by a sincere and selfless desire to do good may feel that impulse becoming stronger as well.

In this sense, the present period offers everyone an opportunity. Each person is being asked, in one way or another, to decide which direction they wish to follow.

The Choice Belongs to You

For positive people, this can be a particularly difficult time. As the intensity of the present conditions increases, the negative qualities within us—the ones we would rather not have at all—may also become stronger. This means that we must consciously develop the positive side of ourselves so that it can balance what is negative within us.

Every person on Earth faces this challenge in some form. There is little value, however, in trying to force the entire world to change. If your intuition tells you to resist negative tendencies in your own life, or to help someone close to you do the same, it may be right to act. But directing that resistance outward, against the people you have decided represent negativity in the world, can lead somewhere very different.

Fighting negativity can easily awaken negativity within ourselves. At first, we simply dislike those who harm others. Then resentment grows. In time, dislike may become hatred. And when we follow that path, we begin to connect ourselves with the very thing we wanted to oppose. We become part of the negativity we were trying to defeat.

Working on Yourself as a Path to Freedom

This period can therefore be used most wisely by cultivating goodness within your own sphere of life. If someone genuinely feels called to work for the good of humanity on a wider scale—and truly finds themselves in a position to do so—then they should follow that calling.

Most people, however, are not in such a position. For them, the most important work begins much closer to home: within themselves. It means reducing the amount of negativity carried within one's own being and gradually finding a way out of the darker regions of one's emotional world.

Ultimately, this leads to a simple but demanding decision: not to allow negative emotions to keep growing, and not to continually feed them. That does not mean pretending they do not exist. They must first be acknowledged. We move through them internally, experience them consciously, understand what is happening within us, and gradually allow their hold to weaken.

The balance of the world does not depend solely on how many people in positions of power misuse their influence. It also depends on the direction each individual chooses within themselves. And that includes you.

Within the spiritual understanding of spirits of the deceased, this relationship takes on an additional significance. Falling repeatedly into negative emotional patterns is believed to create conditions that make a person more receptive to their presence. The more deeply we surrender to anger, hatred, jealousy, or resentment, the more we may open ourselves to influences we would rather not invite into our lives.

For that reason, choosing what we nurture within ourselves is not a small matter. It shapes our inner world—and, eventually, the way we experience the world around us.
